Do you have unusual fingerprints?

Below are the three basic pattern types. The loop is the most common fingerprint pattern all over the world.

To identify the three patterns, note the 'delta', the point where lines from three directions come together. The whorl has two deltas, the loop has one (see bottom-left), and the arch has no delta at all.

Which fingerprints are most rare?

Below are some pictures of less common fingerprints patterns.
Send me a picture/scan of your palm or fingerprint if you have trouble identifying it (frvc [at] dse [dot] nl).

Double Loop

Peacock's eye
Tented Arch

To see if you have an unusual or rare fingerprint, check which finger it is found on. For example, a radial loop is common on the index finger, but extremely rare on the little finger.

Uncommon fingerprint: less than 1 in 20 people have such a fingerprint.
Rare fingerprint: less than 1 in 100 people have such a fingerprint.
Extremely rare fingerprint: less than 1 in 1000 people have such a fingerprint.

In order from most common to most rare:

  1. Ulnar loop = a loop that comes from the pinky side of the hand
    - So common, it is quite rare NOT to have one!
  2. Whorl = a spiral pattern
    - Very common, especially on the thumb, index and ring fingers
  3. Radial loop = a loop that comes from the thumb side of the hand
    - Commonly found on index finger, uncommon on middle finger, rare on other fingers
    =====================
    UNCOMMON FINGERPRINTS:
    =====================
  4. Arch = most simple fingerprint, no loop patterns
    - Uncommon pattern on: all fingers, rare on little finger
  5. Double loop = two loops going in two directions, but is actually a type of whorl
    - Uncommon pattern on: all fingers except thumb, rare on ring and little fingers
  6. Peacock's eye = a tiny whorl inside a loop
    - Uncommon pattern on: all fingers, most common on ring finger, rare on thumb.
    ===============
    RARE FINGERPRINTS:
    ===============
  7. Tented arch = arch pattern but horizontal ridges rising up high in the middle, creating a tent-like pattern. Note: the tented arch is often confused with a loop that looks like a tented arch. Look for any signs of a loop to check if it is a 'real' tented arch.
    - Rare on all fingers, extremely rare on thumb and little finger
  8. Accidental = anything else, such as horizontal rather than vertical loops
    - Rare on index finger, extremely rare on all other fingers

Character traits

Handreaders have associated fingerprints with certain character traits.
  • Loops*: flexible, adaptable, easy going, highly receptive, impressionable, unfocussed, team players.
  • Arches: down to earth, pragmatic, responsible, reserved, consistent.
  • Tented arches: hyperactive, impulsive, intense, fiery.
  • Whorls*: independent, inflexible, individualistic, highly focussed.
  • Double loop (a.k.a. composite): indecisive, uncertain, diplomatic. Some double loops look more like whorls, others are more clearly two intertwined loops. Depending on which one it is, see also the associated loop or whorl characteristics.
  • Peacock's eye (a.k.a. central pocket loop): perfectionistic, good eye for detail. It is more of a whorl than a loop, so see also whorl characteristics.

*Note that loops and whorls are quite common - so it would take about 4+ whorls to make you a 'whorly' person and 7+ loops to make you a 'loopy' person.

Handreaders also give specific meaning to the fingers. To interpret the meaning, you need to combine all the characteristics, and this takes experience (say, getting people's feedback from reading at least 1000 hands). But it can be fun linking the fingerprints characteristics to the individual fingers:

  • Thumb: Willpower/control
  • Index: Public image, self expression
  • Middle finger: Values, morals
  • Ring finger: Aesthetics, creativity
  • Pinky: Communication

The meaning also depends on the hand you look at - this is if you have different fingerprints on your left hand compared to your right hand:

  • Dominant hand (right if right handed): Public self
  • Passive hand: Private self

Fingerprints on your palm?

Do you have any fingerprints on your palm? Is it a loop inbetween two fingers? No? Congratulations, whatever it is automatically qualitifies as an uncommon palm pattern! One or more loops are usually found on the area of the palm between the fingers. The one between the ring finger and pinky is commonly called the 'humor loop', and between the ring and middle fingers is called the 'loop of seriousness' (draw your own conclusion about this one...but it refers to 'type' of humor rather than humor itself). A loop between the index and middle fingers is quite rare, and is a sign of royal lineage in Indian traditional palmistry. Some people also have loops or arches elsewhere, most commonly in the area around the base of the thumb. It is also quite common to have a loop on the side of the palm opposite the thumb, about halfway up, which is called a memory loop. A whorl print is very rare anywhere on the palm.

Fingerprints around the world

In some human populations whorls are more common, such as among aboriginal Australians, Eskimos and in some parts of Asia. Europeans tend to have more loops. Arches are more common among the Bushmen, Efe pygmies and oddly enough, the Dutch. Nevertheless, the order of commonness: loop -> whorl -> arch, is the same everywhere.

Can fingerprints be forged?

Apparently it is not too difficult to fool a fingerprint security system. Check out this demonstration from MythBusters:

Hi - that peacock's eye on your left middle finger is definitely rare. A peaock's eye on the pinky (little finger) is also quite rare. A peacock's eye on the thumb is very rare. Do you recognize these peacock's eye traits: "perfectionistic, good eye for detail" ? Maybe you want to post your hands at the club: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/palmistryprimalfocus/

Hi everyone. i just had a question:
Is there anyone that can tell me what my fingerprint means? I have the exact replica of a yin yang symbol on my left thumb. I freaked out a very nice figerprinting lady at the post office two years in a row. She remembered me after a year not becuase of my face, but because of my fingerprint!! Does this have any significance?

If anyone could direct me to book on this subject i be very grateful:)

I've always found fingerprints to be very fascinating. I mean, it seems crazy that just these little ridge patterns on everyone's fingertips can really be unique. Anyway, I'm very curious about my fingerprints because I have weird ones. The fingerprints on my left hand are all whorls, the fingerprints on my right hand are all archs, and my thumbs are both double loops. Not only that, but my left index fingerprint forms the image of a smiley face in the center of the whorl ridge pattern :). Also, I was looking at my girlfriend's fingertips today, and all of her prints are loops, except for the thumbs, which are whorls! Any idea's on our weird fingerprints?

h.l. said...

Hi,
that's fascinating, it's extremely unusual to have such different fingerprints on left and right hands, especially because arches and whorls are sort of opposing poles. This might suggest that you have two very different way of looking at the world. Adding the double loops on thumbs, I guess you have a lot of difficulty making decisions. As for your girlfriend, that's a well balanced hand, and not unusual.

I'm curious, are the lines of your hand (left versus right) also very different? Would be great if you could post your hands at the hands/palmistry discussion group

h.l. said...

Hi Christine,
Thanks for your comments. 9 arches is really quite unusual, but be sure to check that they are real arches. Sometimes there is a very small loop visible within the arch. Arch-holders are said to be sober, down-to-earth, reliable, constant & consistent. They also seem to have a lower level of emotional resonance / mimicking the emotions of others (which we tend to do). Does this sound familiar?

i have a very odd looking pattern located between my ring finger and my pinky....it looks exactly like an eye within a triangular pattern....not sure what it means but the eye kinda spirals into itself till it reaches a single circle in which it stops....its on my left hand...if you can come up with any explanations let me know at this email....Insanity_has_no_breaking_point@hotmail.com

Hi,
I have some strange patterns on both hands: L Index- double loop w/peacock eye together!!! L ring finger the same thing, L pinky a whorl(cause there are 2 deltas) w/weird peacock eye line, which goes down 2-3 lines and stops, R pinky a whorl with a tiny double loop center and R ring finger- same as R pinky...Gypsy palmreader I met in Europe was very enthusiastic to read my hand before she took a look at it, then she saw it, closed it and said go away, turn around and walked away...end of show. That feaked me out. Since then I was curious. I would appreciate if anybody explains these patterns. Thanks.

Hi, perfectly normal fingerprints but the last one is uncommon - peacock's eye on little finger. This print is uncommon on all fingers except ring finger.

h.l. said...

About similar fingerprints - yes in family members they tend to be similar. The ACTUAL fingerprints may be different but look at the details, such as the shape of the whorl, the distance between the ridges. It is in these details that you will often find similarities between hands of family members that you won't find with other people.

All of my finger prints are peacock eyes. Then I even have some lines that overlap the finger prints like horizontal lines through my thumbs and a star on my first and second finger on my right hand. The star on the second finger has four lines surrounding it making it look like a square around it but none of the short lines around it actually touch. Anyways, I've got a bunch of other little lines on my finger tips but the most noticeable ones were the ones I mentioned. The only different between the peacock's eyes on all of my fingers is that some face to the left and others face to the right. Weird isn't it?

h.l. said...

That's interesting, you have ulnar and radial peacock's eyes? Ulnar means facing the little finger, Radial means facing the thumb side. Handreaders associate peacock's eyes with perfectionism and the ability to escape/avoid accidents if on the ring finger. Does this sound like you?

It is common to have lines on the fingerprints especially horizontal ones, I don't know about particular shapes.

Anonymous said...

Do bull's eyes have any significance attached to them? And how often do people have symmetrical patterns on the right and left hands? My prints are all REALLY symmetrical, and all whorls, except for loops on my pinky fingers. Thanks.

Anonymous said...

hi does your right and left hand have the exact same finger prints?

h.l. said...

Right and left hand fingerprints are often (but not always) the same. E.g. if you have a whorl on your left thumb it is likely that you also have a whorl on your right thumb. But they are never EXACTLY the same. Every fingerprint is truely unique, even when comparing your own left and right hands.

Those with mostly one type of fingerprints will make you loopy, whorly etc., I suggest reading the associated comment above.

Mostly tented arches is really unusual, I have never heard of such a case. I've only rarely come across one and never more than a few. Would be great to get a picture of it (frvc at dse dot nl) to confirm the fingerprints. Are you a highly energetic, energized person?

I am a 23 year old blonde white female with hazel eyes from Los Angeles. Every single one of my fingers is the most common loop pattern except for my right index/pointer finger, which is a tented arch. I heard this is rare (seen in less than 1 out of 100 people). My dad is half Swedish and half Welsh with blond hair and blue eyes, my mother is Russian, German and other Mediterranean Jewish with brown hair and eyes. I checked my mom and my dad and my boyfriend and 3 other friends and none of them have the tented arch. One time on CSI Miami one of the CSIs pointed out a suspect had a tented arch and that it was very rare! It made me feel special.

Hi,
My daughter has no finger/toe prints. Does that mean something? Is this because she is too young and hasn't developed them yet?She is 11
She also doesn't have any well defined palm lines, just a mass of very thin lines going down from her fingers to her palms, that are barely noticeable.
Parents, grandparents and 2 siblings all have fingerprints.

h.l. said...

Hi,
No fingerprints is extremely rare. Sometimes fingerprints fade away and I've seen this on older people - they are still there but just not visible. Because she is young that seems to suggest there really are no fingerprints. Do her hands sweat? In any case I think you should go with her to a dermatologist.

Not well defined palm lines is much more common. I'd have to see a picture of the hand to see how defined the lines are. Would it be possible to get a picture or scan? You could send it to: frvc [at] dse [dot] nl (don't worry, I never post other people's hands online)

Here's an article about a genetic disorder which can cause this condition (but that does not necessarily mean that someone without fingerprints has this disorder): http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=2771451&page=1

I was checking out my fingerprints and they are not rare ones as far as I know but I noticed that my thumbs have double loops, my last three fingers on both hands are ulnar loops along with my right index finger but my left index finger is a tented arch. I looked at my husbands and his thumbs , and all fingers have the same pattern of ulnar loops except his left index is different than all fingers like mine with a regular whorl. Are most people like this or is it in a specific blood heritage to have the left index completely different?

h.l. said...

zak: the tented arch on your middle finger is the rarest, about 0.6% of people have it. Not as rare as you say but still quite rare.

cexee: your tented arch on the index finger is quite uncommon. Having different index finger patterns on each hand is quite common.

vijay: all whorls is a bit uncommon but I've seen it a few times. It is more common in some parts of the world esp. some parts of Asia.

toeprints comment: as far as i know not much is known about toeprints, which is unfortunate. I'd like to see some toeprint statistics.

Yes they should grow back to be exactly as they were before. In the past some criminals have tried to remove their fingerprints and failed, because they always grow back.

Just curious... It looks as though all the fingerprints on my right hand are whorls--some almost as symmetrical as bullseyes--while on my left hand it's all big wavy loops. Is that common? Thanks.

Anonymous said...

My fingerprints have vanished. Apparently I no longer have friction ridges on my fingers. My age is 88. Perhaps this is relevant to the disappearance.

h.l. said...

Yes this is probably age related. Most probably your fingerprints are still there but just difficult to see, obscured by creases in the skin. You could try checking with a magnifying glass, or otherwise make a print. To make a print you need water-soluble paint and an ink roller:
1. put a little bit of paint on a hard, flat surface - for example a mirror or sheet of plastic placed on a table.
2. spread the paint evenly using a roller
3. now use the roller to 'roll' the paint onto your finger.
4. press the finger on a sheet of white paper.

Well, I have same pattern in all 10fingers, palm and even in legs. All pattern is ulnar loop only. Doesn't it sound unique? I don't know exactly, what it signifies? Any clue??

Hi Sir,
I have peacock eye on left hand index finger and double loop on right hand thumb finger. Is it rare if so wat ti indicates.

Anonymous said...

I have plain whorls on 9 fingers and a double whorl on my left thumb.

Anonymous said...

i have a almost tented arch but it is to low to be one. It looks like it's in the middle of a normal arch and a tented arch. Oh, and it's on my middle finger on my left hand.the traits for the arch match me prefectly, but the tented arch traits don't match me at all. So i don't think it's rare but it could be, but i really don't know.

hi, what does it mean that all of my loops come from the pinky side except my left index finger comes from the thumb side?

thanks, Sita (www.sitaji.com)

Quite a few comments/questions to catch up to!

Lain: your fingerprints are not that uncommon, although having such different prints on left and right hands is not so common. Your least common print is the peacock's eye on the ring finger.

"I have all arches. My mother has nine arches, and her mother has all arches." - this is interesting, it clearly shows how fingerprints are inherited.

Ideulogy: that's a very interesting mix of fingerprints. As to your question about musicality - loops around the base of the thumb i.e. on the palm itself have been associated with musical ability. The exact locations can be found in this article, figure 12:
http://www.edcampbell.com/PalmD-History.htm

"All peacock's eye" - that seems very unusual, would love to see a picture of that. I think 4 or 5 is the most I've ever seen.

10 ulnar loops on all finger: I've seen it a few times (don't know about feet though). It would make you an intensely 'loopy' person (see loop characteristics in this article)

"tented arch on my middle finger" if it is not exactly like the picture it is probably not a 'true' tented arch.

'loop from the thumb side on index finger'- that's a radial loop, which is common on the index finger but uncommon on all other fingers. Why it is so common on the index finger is a mystery.

"peacock eye on left hand index finger " - this is definitely quite rare. The double loop on the thumb is relatively common (but less common than a loop or whorl).

hey I had to get fingerprinted for work and I learned that all of my fingerprints are arches. The guy who was doing my fingerprints said that in his twenty-five year career, he hasn't seen this. Why did he say it was rare to have ten arches?

Anonymous said...

All Peacock eyes!!! :)

Anonymous said...

all loops apart from right middle finger, which is an arch; my left index finger is ALMOST an arch but not quite, it has a loop in it.
Strange thing is that,on all the other fingers "next" to every loop (in the same fingerpring) there's a small arch, on the thumb side of my hands.

I have arches on all 10. Is that rare?

Unknown said...

Hi, does anyone know what a whorl just below and between the ring and pinkie finger means. P.S. It is not the loop of humour.

h.l. said...

"arches on all 10" - some time back I would have said that this is very rare, but I think you are now the 10th or 11th person to post about having 9 or 10 arches! But maybe that's just a coincidence.

"whorl just below and between the ring and pinkie finger" - that's very rare, I've only seen it once before. Is it a small whorl or a large whorl? Do you have any other loops or whorls on the palm? Is it only on one hand?

Anonymous said...

Hey,I have a strange assortment of prints ranging from loops to whorls to peacock's eyes to unclassifiable. But my real question is about a weird print on my palm. On my left palm, below my thumb, I have a peacock's eye. It isn't on my right palm and I haven't been able to find anyone else with one, either. If you can tell me what it might mean please e-mail me at Lambda114@hotmail.com. Thanks.

I think I have an "eye of the peacock" print on my right palm(I'm right handed), opposite side of thumb. Also one on my third finger right hand. What does it mean?

i have peacock eyes on all fingers , and on palm of hand what does that means.

Anonymous said...

All of my fingers have radial loops, except my right ringer finger, which has a peacocks eye but alos loops out radially. The peacocks eye may have been caused by a serious burn I recieved when I was younger.

Omg the part about telling character traits is so true. I have the peacocks eye on my index finger and I am a definately a perfectionist and I am also an ambassador so i am definitley a public image.

Avania said...

Hi what does a peacocks eye on the right and left pinky fingers mean?
I have whorls on all other fingers on my right hand.

Left hand
thumb - loop
index - peacock's eye
middle - loop
ring - whorl
pinky - peacock's eye

Unknown said...

I have radial loops on all 10 fingers(with the loops on each hand leading away from their respective thumbs).

Hey i have a loop and an arch on all 10 fingers and under my pinkies on each hand below the halfway crease line I have huge whorls one is a spiral that twirls right till there is no more room and the other whorl becomes a peacock but the middle looks more like an 8

Akayla said...

Hello.

Sorry for adding to the piles of questions already here, but I found this site after trying to find a particular meaning for a very odd set of prints on my palms. Said prints are, on my right
(dominant)hand, a whorl within an arch between my ring and pinky fingers and a whorl within a loop girdling my ring finger. On my left (passive) hand, a whorl within a delta lies also between my ring and pinky fingers. Since I was very small I've been in the habit of studying my hands, and I swear they look for all the world like an open eye, a necklace, and the infamous 'Eye in the Triangle' symbols (respectively).

Sorry for the intricate post, but I'd really like to know if anyone can explain this to me.
Thanks.

I have an accidental arch on my R index, a central pocket loop (whorl) on my L middle finger, and a Peacock's Eye (whorl) on my L ring finger. Everything else is Ulnar, but some of the central areas of the ulnar loops are really thin - the innermost loop lines are very close together - just a bit more squishing, and they would look like the accidental arch.

FreeBee said...

I have whorl on all 10 fingers. Truely independent, inflexible, individualistic and a weirdo. I read somewhere that people who have same type of fingerprint on all fingers are very rare, like a few in a million. Is it true?

h.l. said...

About same fingerprint on each finger being rare - no that is not true for 'all loops' and 'all whorls' because these prints are the two most common prints. All arches or any other fingerprint which is not so common would be rare to have on all fingers.

About the "index finger has a broken double arch cut directly down the middle" that sounds very interesting. Is it not a kind of double loop? Would be interested in seeing a picture of that.

About the fingerprint-type patterns on the palm, those are rare occurrences with the possible exception of a loop on the 'ulnar' side of the palm which seems relatively common. I have only once found whorls between the fingers, on a person with quite an eccentric personality.

About the arches with a loop at the bottom...that is probably a type of loop (there is no such thing as an arch-loop, it is one or the other). If the loop is very small it may look like an arch, but it is still a loop. I suspect the way the loop looks can hint at the origin of the person (e.g. long thin loops, thick short loops, high/low triradius, etc.). It would be interested to know your family origins?

Hope this answers at least a few of the questions...

Hi.
All my fingerprints are Ulnar loops except for on my left hand on my index finger, which is an arch. I'm not sure though if that is a tented arch or just a normal arch though. Could you tell me what it means?
It's just funny because my triplet sister has all Ulnar loops.

Hi,

I recently saw my fingerprint highlighted and my left index finger seemed to include an image of a man, with a hat like in the 1800's. It really startled me. Have you ever heard of anything like that before? I know we can see pictures in the clouds ect., maybe that is what this was, but it jumped out at me at the time.

What does it mean when you have lines across your fingerprints? All of my fingers have deep, unnatural lines crossing through them either horizontally or vertically and they cut through the finger print. Does that mean anything?

Hi, I have all bullseye whorls on all ten fingers.. Looking at one photos online, I guess they are plain whorls. They are truly bullseyes. Can you tell me what that means?

I had a guy who read fingerprints freak out at mine...said usually only famous people like rockstars had them.

Thanks for any input!

h.l. said...

A lot of posts from people with the same fingerprint on all finger. This is not so rare for loops and whorls (all whorls doesn't make a rockstar or famous person, that's nonsense, it's just a bit less common than all loops and palmists would say that would make for a strong, individualistic personality). All arches and all peacock's is definitely quite rare though, and I'd think that all radial loops would indeed be extremely rare - are you sure that's not ulnar loops? In palmistry all peacock's eyes would signify very high attention to detail, precision and perfectionism.

I use to fingerprint employees and while taking the training found out I had 10 arches and realized the rarity of it. I was told a study was done by the Dept of Justice on individuals with 10 arches to see if there were significant findings with those who were serial killers. I am so grateful that the findings were not significant or I would never let anyone know that I had 10 arches. I also found out that the world population of those with all arches is extremely low.

Right Hand
R-Thumb: Whorl
R-Index: Looks like a whorl, but it kinda goes two ways in the middle of my finger, it parts.
R-Middle: Whorl
R-Ring: Loop, not starting from the right or left sides, just from the middle.
R-Pinky: Left Loop

Left Hand
L-Thumb: Right Loop
L-Index: Right Loop
L-Middle: Double Loop
L-Ring: Looks like a loop (or a whorl, It looks more like a loop) Is not starting from the right or left (again) but from the middle (Again)
L-Pinky: Right Loop

Right Foot (I'm just going to go by thumbs and index, etc like the fingers, but for my toes.)
R-Big Thumb: Looks like a left loop
R-Index: I dont know, it looks like a arch, but it has a parting just underneath it. Like a tent, but not quite. Its rounded.
R-Middle: It looks like a double loop, Im not sure.
R-Ring: Left Loop
R-Pinky: Left Loop

Left Foot
L-Thumb: I cant tell (because of the bad prints I took) But it looks like (im pretty sure it is) a Right Loop
L-Index- It looks like an arch, forming from the right (a right arch) :)
L-Middle: Arch
L-Ring: Right Loop
L-Pinky: It looks like a mini-version of the tented arch.

Are any of these unusual?
Do you know what my right index FINGER is? And my right and left Ring FINGERS are?
And my Right Index TOE and my right Middle TOE and my Left Pinky TOE mean?
Thanks

Hi, I have arch fingerprints on ALL TEN of my fingers. When I was little, a police officer demonstrated how to take fingerprints and used me as an example. When he did the inked prints, all ten showed up the same print. He was fascinated with this because he said he'd never seen that. Does this mean anything? I have always felt this to be an interesting personal trait to have and have wondered for decades if there is any meaning behind it.
